1) Packers -6.5 (1 unit) vs. Lions - First off we have a system going against Detroit which is to play against any team that had a losing record last season if they won SU on Opening Day this year and scored 38 points or more, as these teams have gone 1-13 SU & 2-12 ATS since 1984. Going inside the stats, the Lions allowed Arizona to gain a total of 439 yards on offense and go 9-15 on third downs. Turnovers cost the Cardinals a chance in this one as they finished with a -3 turnover ratio.
Green Bay comes into this game in an early season must win situation. An 0-2 start, including two straight division losses, would pretty much put this team behind the eight ball for the rest of the season. They need this game badly.
Flashing back to last season, the Packers have lost their last three straight games, including their last two at home. Since Brett Favre became the starter in 1992, the Packers have never lost four consecutive games or three consecutive home games. Now I'm fully aware that these streaks eventually end, just as their home playoff winning streak ended last season, but I have no problem backing a veteran team led by Brett Favre in desperate need of a win. Lay it.
2) Dolphins -3 (1 unit) @ Jets - Don't be fooled into thinking Miami is not a good football team because they lost to the Texans. Even though it's an embarassing loss on the surface, it would have been a tragedy had they lost to them last year on Opening Day, as Dallas did. A one point loss on a late FG is nothing more then a close game that got away from them. Dom Capers has shown he can transform an expansion team into a winner quickly and they we're definitely ready to play last Sunday.
The Jets did not look very good last week against the Redskins. Their defense allowed Washington to average 4.7 yards per rush, and that was against RB's Ladell Betts and Trung Canidate. They will have a very tough time stopping Ricky Williams this week, who should get more then the 17 touches he got last week. Look for Miami to break their five year losing streak at the Meadowlands on Sunday.
3) Panthers +10 (-120, 1 unit) @ Buccaneers - Philadelphia tried a "pass first" philosophy against Tampa's defense on Monday Night and you all saw the results of that. You do not allow the Buccaneers to get into a groove rushing the passer early in a football game because you will lose. Look for Carolina RB Stephen Davis to get plenty of touches in this one to take the pressure off new starting QB Jake Delhomme. Tampa wins this one but the Panthers keep it close enough to cover the number.
